SkillUp

The Startup Refugees SkillUp program supports young adults across Finland through a comprehensive model that combines sector-specific training, career coaching, and mentoring. The program offers practical pathways into working life by providing education in fields such as ICT, logistics, care, and retail, alongside digital and AI skills development. Participants also receive individualized, culturally sensitive guidance in their native languages, helping them identify career paths that match their skills, interests, and ambitions. The approach places strong emphasis on accessibility, long-term engagement, and reaching individuals who are not served by existing public systems.

The program brings together companies, volunteers, and organizations in a collaborative model that connects talent with opportunity. Employers participate in mentoring programs, recruitment simulations, and training activities, gaining direct insight into participants’ skills and potential. By engaging companies throughout the process, the program supports more effective matching between job seekers and labor market needs, while also helping employers build more inclusive recruitment and workplace practices. The current implementation of the program has been made possible with support from the Saastamoinen Foundation, enabling the piloting and further development of the model.

Through this model, the program supports a significant number of participants in transitioning into employment, education, or entrepreneurship. Participants strengthen their professional identity, improve their work-life skills, and expand their networks. At the same time, employers gain access to motivated and diverse talent, and professionals working with the target group enhance their capacity to provide inclusive and impactful services. The program also contributes to increased social inclusion and trust by supporting participants’ active role in society.
